“It’s my job to come in here and do everything in my power to get the Seahawks to the Super Bowl,” Holmgren said upon his hiring on Jan. 8, 1999. “I cannot tell you the excitement … that is running through my veins at this particular point.”
That’s great, coach, but how long will it take? How long before the Seahawks challenge for a Super Bowl?
“You know what? Let me look at some film first,” Holmgren replied. “I’m going to stay away from that one, but rest assured, I think we have a pretty good formula.”
The formula has finally produced results. It took some tweaking and a lot more time than Holmgren could have expected.
But the Seahawks have arrived. They finished the regular season with a 13-3 record, best in franchise history. They won a playoff game for the first time since 1984. The organization stands one victory away from its first Super Bowl.
As the NFC Championship Game approaches – kickoff against Carolina is at 3:30 this afternoon – we turn our own spotlight on events that brought the Seahawks to this point.
