How do I take notes on big books?

What a fascinating discussion!

The whole discussion centers around notetaking and future recall, specifically for graduate studies. I don't know what drew me to it (it stuck out on Furl); it's engrossing. Perhaps it's the librarian in me, to whom the discovery of a new organization method is beyond absorbing.
